Introduction

Kostis Velonis combines found materials into fragile and autonomous sculptures whose point of departure lies in the failure of modern utopias. From Russian Constructivism to the Bauhaus and the 1968 movements, he takes up the grand narratives and edifices of ideas, carrying them over into subnarratives of personal struggles, passions, and solitude. Literary figures like Don Quixote serve as models for melancholy heroes amidst lost dreams of revolution. For Velonis, failure goes beyond the negative element of resignation, offering a possibility of linking great goals back to the subject. Even though sorrow and loss are always present, aspiration remains a driving and poetic force in his works.

Die überwiegend aus Holz gefertigten Skulpturen und Objekte von Kostis Velonis bedienen sich einer konstruktivistischen Bildsprache und weisen konkrete Bezüge zur Architektur der 1920er Jahre auf.
Velonis setzt gefundene Materialien zu fragilen und autonomen Skulpturen zusammen, die ihren Ausgangspunkt im Versagen moderner Utopien haben. Vom russischen Konstruktivismus über das Bauhaus bis hin zu den Bewegungen der 1968er nimmt er die großen (Gedanken-)Gebäude auf und überführt sie in Sub-Narrative von persönlichen Kämpfen, Leidenschaften und Einsamkeit. Literarische Figuren wie Don Quijote, der Ritter von der traurigen Gestalt, und der einsame Cowboy stehen Pate für den melancholischen Helden inmitten der verloren gegangenen Revolutionsträume. Das Scheitern ist bei Velonis nicht der negative Moment der Resignation, sondern zugleich die Möglichkeit, große Ziele an das Subjekt zurück zu binden und auf persönlicher Ebene anschlussfähig zu machen. Die alltäglichen und oftmals rauen Materialien setzt er zu wohl komponierten Skulpturen zusammen, die sich konstruktivistischer Prinzipien und spezifischer Form durchaus bewusst sind.
